Issey Miyake is a fashion designer known for challenging conventional concepts of design and innovating new techniques. His aesthetic is rooted in traditional Japanese design but he rejects the label of 'Japanese fashion designer'. In 1993 Miyake created the Pleats Please range, innovating the traditional pleating process by reversing it, producing garments that permanently hold their pleats. In 2000 he launched A-POC (A Piece of Cloth) which saw another renewed form of clothing production, forming a tube of stretch jersey fabric which garments are cut from. A kind of DIY fashion that the wearer could customise as they please. Miyake's designs are not only sculptural and architectural, but practical too.
