Jean Paul Gaultier is a French fashion designer known for his unconventional approach to design. After beginning his career in some of the most innovative couture houses of the early 1970s (Pierre Cardin, Jacques Esterel, Jean Patou, and Angelo Tarlazzi), Gaultier established his own design house in 1982 with the backing of Japanese consortium Kashiyama. Inspired by the streets of Paris and London, a multitude of cultures, gender, and underwear as outerwear, Gaultier achieved international fame in 1990 after designing the costumes for Madonna’s Blond Ambition tour. Gaultier was Creative Director of Hermès from 2003 to 2010; his collaboration with American brand Supreme in 2019 sold out almost immediately.
