Karl Lagerfeld (1965-2019) was one of the most celebrated designers of his time. His ability to design simultaneously for several different houses was a defining characteristic of his career. Lagerfeld became known as a man who was never content to do just one thing at a time. Whilst he is often associated with Chloé (1963-1983, 1992-1997) he is perhaps most well-known for reviving Chanel, a brand that many considered moribund, after he became artistic director in 1983. Lagerfeld also designed for Fendi (1965-2019) and established his eponymous brand in 1975. Known for his youthful and elegant styles, Lagerfeld was the master of reinvention and imbued his designs with what he called “intellectual sexiness” along with numerous historical and cultural reference points.
