Katharine Hamnett is a British fashion designer well-known for her political and environmental activism. Since establishing her own business in 1979, Hamnett has consistently used her collections to endorse her activism through production and design techniques, with the aim of increasing public awareness of ethical and ecological issues. Using her fashion shows as a platform, Hamnett created the now iconic slogan T-shirts with “Choose Life” emblazoned across the front. The slogan T-shirts became a symbol of resistance in the 1980s, featuring many different messages, from “58% Don’t Want Pershing” to “Cancel Third World Debt”. In 1984 Hamnett was given the Designer of the Year award by the British Fashion Council.
